Senators call for better data collection to measure economic impact of sexual harassment
Senators call for better data collection to measure economic impact of sexual harassmentSenators call for better data collection to measure economic impact of sexual harassmentA group of 22 senators, led by Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), sent a letter to the Department of Labor on Monday requesting that the department establish better, and mora detailed, methods of collecting data on sexual harassment in the workplace. In recent weeks and months, the MeToo movement has brought to light the experiences of countless workers who have endured sexual harassment for far too long, the letter states. The senators, all Democrats, want labor officials to measure the extent of discrimination and how it impacts the American labor force. Harassment and discrimination affects minimum-wage workers, middle class workers and white-collar workers, and Gillibrand points out that in addition to the emotional costs, there are also economic onesThe personal costs of sexual harassment are often invisible, yet ar e no less real, and are often coupled with negative economic consequences. Sexual harassment can have both and physical consequences, including depression, anxiety, muscle aches, headaches, and high blood pressure. These ailments can result in missed workdays and reduced productivity. The letter also cites statistics showingwomen who have been harassed are 6.5 times more likely to change jobs than those who have not These consequences are particularly concerning in science, technology, engineering, and math fields, where approximately one in five women report experiencing sexual harassment at work.It also points to a report stating that 90% of female workers in the restaurant field have experienced sexual harassment, with over 50% doing so on a weekly basis.Gillibrand has asked for a prompt response from the Labor Department.

The one answer that always wins in an interview
The one answer that always wins in an interviewThe one answer that always wins in an interviewEveryone has a different interview style. Some interviewers get right down to the business and dont waste time with small talk. Others kick off an interview with softball questions as a way to relax the candidate and get to know their personality better. Eventually, harder questions are asked, and the interview dance begins.Whenever people are interviewing, they wonder if their answers are in line with the interviewer. A candidate wants to connect with the interviewer. They want to be liked in hopes that the connection is a catalyst for being hired.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreOne way to help facilitate connection is to mimic the interviewers gestures or verbiage. Dont do this aggressively or itll be obvious and seem like a game of Simon says. Instead, focus on how the interviewer si ts or gestures. A few times during the interview find ways to mirror either the body language or the actual language of the interviewer. If the interviewer mentions a desire for a candidate that is innovative or good with deadlines be sure to reiterate those qualities using their own phrases or words in your answers. If you find the interviewer listens with their hands folded, you may consider making the same posture during the next round of questions.Once the thick of the interview begins and the harder questions are being asked, how do you respond? Is there a universal response that always wins with hard interview questions? Yes. First, listen to the hard or complex question and smile. Then compliment the interviewer on their question, You know, that is a really great question. This works because the interviewer immediately feels they are doing their job well. Everyone likes to feel like they are skilled in what they do. Complimenting them is an instant way to spark pride in the int erviewer. Regardless of how you answer the question, the interviewer is probably still caught up on the compliment. Their reaction to whatever you say is usually overwhelmingly positive because it began with a rush of positive feelings. You can overdo it, though. Dont tell them every question is a good one. Find a way to mention once or twice how great their question is when they ask. This allows you to make a positive connection with the interviewer beyond just selling your resume and skill set. The interviewer will now have the chance to see not only will you add value to the company, but you also see their value.Every manager and interviewer wants to feel valued and respected by their staff. Knowing you feel this way about them builds their confidence in you and themselves. Everyone wins, and it could help you win the job.Lindsay Anvik is a third generation entrepreneur and CEO of See Endless, Inc. Caroline Steele - Zoologist and Education Adviser, Taronga Zoo
Caroline Steele - Zoologist and Education Adviser, Taronga Zoo Caroline Steele Zoologist and Education Adviser, Taronga ZooPosted October 13, 2011, by Helen Isbister I worked at Taronga Zoo as a volunteer when I welches much younger and did work experience zu siche. The fact that I get to work with animals every day is fantastic. Caroline obtained a degree with Honours in Zoology before going on to work as a school science teacher for ten years. She then went back to her first love and now works at Sydneys Taronga Zoo teaching children about animals and their environments, including environmental education and conservation. Caroline revealed some of the options of pursuing zoology careers for people who are interested in working with animals. What do you do in your day-to-day job? I do a variety of different jobs and activities. I am a member of a team of eight teachers at Tarongas Education Department and in my main program I coordinate the Schools Zoomobile. The Zoomobile visit s about 13 regional areas within NSW every year as well as lots of schools in the Sydney metro area. FYI The Taronga Zoomobile is an outreach program that gives students who have difficulty coming to the zoo a chance to meet, learn about and interact with native wildlife. Being part of a bigger team gives me the opportunity to work on other programs with local schools and teach classes here at the zoo. We binnensee roughly 150 000 students a year. A range of interactive workshops are offered at the zoo for the school studienordnung from Kindergarten to Year 12 and tertiary level. Students can either come through the zoo as a self-guided excursion with teachers, or with a workshop included where the students get the chance to interact with at least five live animals including reptiles, mammals and amphibians. The team works with many schools doing project-based learning units on current conservation and in situ (habitat-based) programs occurring at the zoo. FYI In situ is a Lati n phrase meaning in the place and refers to working with animals in their natural habitat. Ex situ is off-site conservation such as wildlife programs in zoos. What do you teach the students? The role of the zoo is always evolving, the focus has moved from menageries to eco museums to biogeographical exhibits. Conservation and education are the key focus now which is represented through all workshops at the zoo. The workshops or project-based learning activities at the zoo have clear conservation messages integrated into knowledge, understanding and skills within the school curriculum. What do you enjoy about your job? The fact that I get to work with animals every day is fantastic. In a typical lesson in the Zoomobile, I will show at least six animals to the students, which they can interact with including a snake, possum, frog, echidna, lizard, young crocodile, cockatoo and Tawny Frogmouth. It is powerful to actually see the kids change their attitudes and come away with positive conservation actions. Being able to combine environmental education with my passion, which is zoology, is just a dream for me. What other animals do you work with? We use a lot of Australian animals. All the animals at the Education Centre are usually rescued by the public and brought to the Taronga Wildlife Hospital or confiscated animals from Customs which can not be released back into the wild. Teaching an adaptations lesson may involve a close-up interaction with a Bearded Dragon and Shingleback Lizard to compare their adaptations and suitability to the environments they live in. Ive also worked on the Little Penguin in situ program with local schools on the Northern Beaches and the Boorolong frog in situ program with regional NSW schools. Hand-raising possums and bandicoots has also been a bonus. How do the kids react to the animals? Students today have little experience with live animals, particularly students who live in urban areas. They seem to be unconnected to even their local areas and the uniqueness of Australian native fauna. At first, most students are petrified of any animal due to a lack of connectedness to the environment. Whats the funniest thing an animal has done when youve been showing it to students? Going to the toilet always gets a laugh. If an animal does seem funny or unsettled it is usually a sign of stress and the animal will be placed back into its enclosure. What are some other jobs available at the zoo? Zookeeping is the obvious one, but we have 300 people who work here in all sorts of capacities from exhibit planning, research scientists, sponsorship and fundraising, to media and public relations (PR). What did you do before you became an education adviser? I worked at Taronga as a volunteer when I was much younger and did work experience here. I always knew that I would like to work in this field, but its quite competitive becoming a zookeeper involves years of volunteering and casual keeping before becoming permanent. I have an interest in education so decided to train as a high school science teacher and hoped to eventually combine education with flora and fauna with an interactive element. I have worked as a science teacher in London and Sydney since 1997. What did your degree in zoology entail? When I studied zoology at university the focus was very much on fauna taxonomic groups and behaviours. I did some entomology courses looking at insects as well as some courses on genetics and animal behaviour. I did my thesis on the reproductive behaviour of dragonflies. Do you need a Zoology Degree to become a zookeeper? Not at all. A lot of zookeepers do have a Zoology degree or some kind of biology background, but it is acceptable to just have a Certificate III in Captive Animals which you can do through the Taronga Training Institute. Volunteer work is always helpful. So, what are your future career aspirations? I love my job as it is, but I would absolutely love to be able to interact more with scho ols at a teacher level and also to get teachers more engaged with sustainable education. I dont think environmental education is addressed enough in the curriculum as it is. What advice would you give to someone interested in moving into this field? You really have to work for it. Working as a volunteer in a zoological organisation is very important to get your foot in door. Here at Taronga Zoo, you can become a discovery host where you interact with the public and handle animals. There is also an excellent program called YATZ (Youth at the Zoo) for 14 to 19 year olds, which allows kids to come in and get a bit of experience to get a feel for what zookeeping is like. You have to be aware that you arent necessarily going to come into a zoo situation and be able to just cuddle animals all the time. Its more about conservation, research and education. Sample Resignation Letters for When Youre Happy to Quit
Sample Resignation Letters for When Youre Happy to QuitSample Resignation Letters for When Youre Happy to QuitSometimes your resignation brings you a sigh of relief, and you are counting your lucky stars to get out of your current job. Maybe you had an employer who was awful or coworkers who gossiped and slacked off on the job.Perhaps your job was so boring that, even trying as hard as you could, you were unable to make the daily grind more interesting. Whatever your reason for wanting to quit, youll want to keep your leave-taking professional. Your resignation letter should reflect a positive, optimistic, forward-looking spirit. Dont blow possible future opportunities with a negative resignation. You never know where or when you could run into the people who witness your resignation and read your resignation letter. You want them to feel positive about you for the future. They could end up in your new company, at your new job, or affect whether you are hired or promoted in the futur e. You just never know, as lifes career course is impossible to predict. Consequently, keep your resignation positive and upbeat. Dont leave a negative impression with your resignation in your permanent personnel file. You can resign from your job in a positive manner. You wont regret putting a positive spin on your resignation from your job, even when youre just happy to get out of there. Resist the temptation to send a resignation letter that says, Im outta here, or Good luck, suckers. Both of these negative approaches were used by not-too-smart quitters in the past. Resignation Letter Dos and Donts Begin your resignation letter with a standard date, the name of theaddressee, usually your direct manager or supervisor, and company address, just as you would any business letter. If you have personal stationery, plan to print the resignation letter to fit your stationery. If not, use a plain piece of quality white paper to print your resignation letter. Never write a resignation letter using your current employers stationery. (Yes, it has happened- unfortunately.) Your resignation letter, especially in the instance of an employer youd like to forget, can be short and sweet. If there was something- anything- that you liked about your job, you can mention it. Make sure that you copy Human Resources for your file and to trigger all of the necessary employment ending events. Also, a good policy is to sleep on your letter overnight before mailing it, to ensure that it is appropriate when you reread your resignation letter in the morning. Again, you can professionally resign without burning bridges. Youll be happy that you did, at some point in time. How the American Association of University Women is Transforming the Pay Gap Conversation
How the American Association of University Women is Transforming the Pay Gap Conversation How the American Association of University Women is Transforming the Pay Gap Conversation Equal Pay Day is celebrated this year on April 2, a day meant to raise awareness about the gap between men and womenâs wages . Research shows that today, in 2019, the gap sits at 21 cents between white women and men- and only widens for women of color and other ethnicities . Perhaps whatâs even more disturbing is the number of people who refuse to believe the pay gap even exists : Many people attribute the gap to womenâs choices to take time off to start and raise families, or to enter into industries that offer lower starting pay. But organizations such as the American Association of University Women (or AAUW) are working diligently to not only close the pay gap but change the conversation surrounding it. As its CEO Kim Churches explains, âAAUWâs mission is to advance gender equity for women and girls through research, education, and advocacy. Pay equity is a critical part of what we do: Until there is equal pay for equal work, women will never achieve full equality.â But its employees believe closing the gap isnât just about advancing womenâs rights to equality- itâs also about ushering in economic change that will positively impact everyone in the U.S. âThe gender pay gap hinders women throughout their lives, from the day they leave college with higher levels of debt, to when they are raising families, all the way into retirement when women collect less in pensions and Social Security,â explains Churches. And, âas a result, more women than men are living below the poverty level. But,â she continues, âthis isnât only about women: Equal pay is a matter of basic fairness that benefits everyone- women, their families, their communities, employers, our economy, and [our] society as a whole.â And Churches has a message for those who donât believe the pay gap exists âThe pay gap is math, not myth,â she says. âWomen arenât choosing lower paying jobs- rather, certain jobs pay less because they are dominated by women. [An example]: Librarians â" predominantly women â" earn less than IT professionals, who are mostly men. But being a librarian entails at least the same level of skills and training than an IT professional, in some cases [more].â According to Glassdoorâs own Salary Tool , which allows users to search the median salaries in their chosen fields by job title, Churches is correct: An IT professional can expect to be paid $85,460, according to Glassdoor , while a librarian can expect to earn $57,135 per year . Whatâs more, AAUW believes societal expectations have steered women into roles that pay less money , such as teachers, counselors, and childcare workers, Churches says, which is an important distinction in the conversation about whether women are to blame for any wage gap that may (or may not, according to naysayers) exist. âIn fields traditionally dominated by men, there are still barriers and biases that get in the way of womenâs success,â she says. The AAUW has the research to back up these claims. â AAUWâs research has shown, in an apples-to-apples comparison, just one year out of college, women are paid almost 7 percent less than their male colleagues who made the same degree and career choices,â Churches says. Put another way, a man and woman who graduate the same year, with the same degree, and who are hired for the same job at the same company would be paid differently. âOur research shows the pay gap exists for every degree level and in every occupation,â she continues. âIn fact, when women enter male-dominated, high paying professions, salaries as a whole actually decrease.â That means that in high-paying fields such as technology or medicine or finance, women experience an even greater pay gap than in other industries. Churches sums up how many feel: âHard to believe this is still happening in 2019, but it is.â Itâs not easy to fight for equal pay- especially when the gap itself isnât even equal. The AAUWâs latest research report, The Simple Truth About the Gender Pay Gap , shows that black women, on average, are paid just 61 cents- while Native American women make 58 cents and Latina women earn just 53 cents- of what men are paid in the same exact jobs. âThere are complex and deep-rooted reasons for this, but the bottom line is that women of color live at the intersection of racism and sexism,â explains Churches. âThe historical experience of minorities in this country has resulted in an enormous range of economic inequality, and the wider pay gap is just one manifestation of that. Consider this: The typical black household possesses just six percent of the wealth owned by the typical white household, and this carries over into challenges for womenâs opportunities in education and job choice. [And] the wealth disparity is similar with other racial and ethnic groups.â But the AAUW is âaggressively advocatingâ for change, despite the challenges, Churches says, and for a long time. Some 55 years ago, it advocated for the Equal Pay Act of 1963 , a measure aimed at stopping wage disparity based on sex. The AAUW also stood beside President Barack Obama when he signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act , an act that gives federal recourse to employees who believe they have been victims of pay discrimination. âToday, weâre continuing our work to advance pay equity on many fronts,â says Churches. âOur AAUW members and advocates are working with states and localities to pass equal pay laws- and weâre seeing a tremendous momentum.â In fact, last year along, 40 states and Washington, D.C. âconsidered legislation to help close the gender pay gap,â she says, âwith six states successfully enacting new laws. [And] on a national level, we are working to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act , which would close loopholes in the Equal Pay Act of 1963.â The AAUW also works directly with employers to âimprove their policies, practices, and workplace cultures so they can move toward pay equity and encourage more women to succeed in leadership roles,â Churches describes. âAnd weâre working with individual women by training them valuable salary negotiation skills through our proven Work Smart program , which offers in-person training as well as a free online course available to anyone. We have a bold goal of training 10 million women in salary negotiation by 2022.â Its efforts seem to be paying off, at least in the private sector: âCompanies are very aware that they need to achieve pay equity so they can attract the strongest possible workforce,â says Churches. âAnd they also realize that paying people fairly is good for their bottom line: They know that equal pay fosters higher retention rates and raises productivity. So, every day, weâre hearing more about employers who are ready and eager to do the right thing.â If you, too, would like to help close the pay gap, the AAUW says there is plenty of work to go around. A great first step, Churches says, would be to pay attention to local, state, and federal legislation on the pay gap and be poised to contact your elected officials whenever possible to encourage them to support measures that will advance equal pay. The AAUW also offers a Two-Minute Activist tool, which will keep you up-to-date on important pay news and then supply you the tools- like letter templates and addresses- to take action. Of course, closing the pay gap can start with you, literally. If you can negotiate higher pay for yourself, you are working to close that gap. âTo help on that front, we created Work Smart , an easy online course that teaches women salary negotiation skills- and weâve set a bold goal of training 10 million women in salary negotiation by 2022,â says Churches. âThe course takes a very practical- and effective- approach toward salary negotiation: We teach women how research salaries in their fields and geographic areas so they have accurate expectations about what a particular position should pay.â And you can also always check out Glassdoorâs ample resources for how to negotiate a higher salary , too!

How introverts can increase productivity at your company
How introverts can increase productivity at your company How introverts can increase productivity at your company Personality tests such as the Myers Briggs personality test have always been an inevitable part of the recruiting process for many companies. Not just for labeling people with different personality types and opting them out, but for getting to know the people and providing a thriving work environment for them. For introverts, who are often left out as not fit for socially exacting workplaces, this might be good news as companies are taking measures to provide a pleasant work experience for them. As for companies that care about their employeesâ personalities, they are one step ahead of others in increasing employee productivity.Introverts are typically naturally self-motivated, analytical and reasonable, good listeners and as a result, good learners, concentrated, and more dedicated - oh! Are these also what youâre looking for in an ideal employee? But to tap into their potentials, you need to know how to treat them and how to provide a pleasant work experience for them. What makes one an introvert?Although itâs not a good idea to describe one as fully introverted or extroverted, research shows that there ARE some genetic and cognitive differences between extroverts and introverts. It seems that compared to extroverted people, introverts lack a gene that makes the brain immediately responsive to external rewards. In other words, introverts are less immediately receptive to external events and are more responsive to inner projections. Whereas extroverts process external stimuli through a short pathway responsible for taste, touch, and visual and auditory senses in their brains, introverts sift the information through a longer pathway responsible for more complicated tasks such as remembering, planning, and problem-solving. This makes them need more time to process information, but it typically pays off: Introverts can be problem-solving machines. The seeming reservedness of introverts might be caused by their cognitive tendency to deeply analyze what they perc eive through their senses. They need some time alone to recharge their brain power and make sense of their whereabouts. Their inner tendencies make them carry some nifty personality traits such as being self-motivated, analytics-oriented, a good listener and as a result a good learner, more concentrated, and more dedicated to the tasks they care about. So, isnât introversion what we should look for in candidates? Not so fast. First of all, employee diversity is a strength at the workplace. Second, itâs not that easy to hack into the true abilities of an introverted employee. You will most probably see the guy strange and unpleasant. How to treat introvertsPersonality comes in a package. It is true that introverts have personality traits that make them great on analytical tasks, but they probably have problems with protracted team collaborations. Some introverted behavioral patterns might make people think that an introvert is rather strange, aloof, or self-centered.If you want to make the best out of your introverted employees, remember the following tips. Be their best friend. Introverted people are typically not conversation starters, and they might easily lose track of their previous friendships. If an introvert does not check on you frequently or is reserved in group meetings, donât think that they are selfish or totally closed. Try to make friends with them by gaining their trust and youâll see that theyâll come to your help more than others. Let them shine. Introverts might think against the grain and this means that they can come up with unconventional ways to solve problems. When dealing with their new ideas, give your introverted employees time to prove themselves. Give them enough time to put their ideas into practice. This will give them more confidence. As Sam Ovens explains only practice gives you confidence. Pay attention to them. It is easy to neglect introverted people. After all, they tend to be wallflowers in parties or inarticulate when they donât have something special to say. Remember to give everybody an equal chance to show themselves, irrespective of whether they are warm and chatty or seemingly cold and reticent. Donât force them into group works. This seems a bit challenging. Your whole company might be set on group values and this might be the propaganda you keep drilling into your employeesâ minds. But before judging introverts for not being as excited as others in group tasks, take time to think of a method to use their problem-solving abilities to your benefit while respecting their preferences. Remember that in a community every personality type should have enough room to prosper. To concludeWe normally have a dose of introversion and extroversion. Or as Carl Jung puts it, âthere is no such thing as a pure introvert or extrovert. Such a person would be in the lunatic asylum.â Yet, introverted characteristics might be said to make one a thinker or problem solver who can increase the productivity of a company. Learn how to provide a pleasant work experience for introverts, and theyâll be who you just needed in your company.Mostafa Dastras has written for some important companies such as HubSpot, WordStream, SmartInsights, and MarketingProfs. Why Syndication Is a Cornerstone of Media
Why Syndication Is a Cornerstone of Media Why Syndication Is a Cornerstone of Media Syndication is a term that is used in both print and broadcast media. It indicates content that is purchased for use by a local newspaper, tv or radio station. It is not produced by the media companys owner but through an outside source. How Syndication Works In the newspaper industry, comic strips, horoscopes, and national columns are often syndicated. A company has the right to sell the content to various local papers across the country. King Features Syndicate sells comic strips like Blondie and Hi and Lois to newspapers. It is owned by Hearst Corporation, a powerful owner of newspapers, magazines and TV stations. Another company, Universal Uclick, offers comics such as Garfield, Peanuts and the Dear Abby advice column. A newspaper publisher, knowing that readers would enjoy reading the funny pages, getting advice or their daily horoscope would sign a contract with a syndicator for a variety of content, based on the interest of the local readership. That content would be sent to the paper in time for publication. It works the same way in broadcasting. Popular TV programs like Wheel of Fortune are sold directly to local stations. Thats why Wheel may air on an ABC affiliate in one city and on an NBC station somewhere else. Most viewers will likely never know that the program isnt furnished by the network but was bought by the local station. Each station gets to choose the time slot to run its syndicated programming. Thats why a popular show such as Jeopardy! may air in the mornings in one DMA and in the early evenings in another city. Wheel and Jeopardy! are sold by the same syndication company, CBS Television Distribution, which will typically try to sell both shows to the same station, along with the companys other offerings, such as Dr. Phil or Judge Judy. Because stations dont need but a handful of shows to fill their daily lineups, the syndicator will likely have shows scattered across several stations in a market. That will mean that a company like CBS Television Distribution may have its shows competing for viewers in the same timeslot on multiple stations. Dr. Phil and Judge Judy may be on at the same time on rival stations. Its inevitable that one show will have higher Nielsen ratings than the other, but despite sounding cannibalistic, the syndication company has the satisfaction of knowing that it made deals for both programs. Dont let the name CBS Television Distribution confuse you. Yes, it is tied to the CBS broadcast network, but its mission is entirely different. Thats why it will sell shows to stations affiliated with the other networks. There is a lot of money to be made. Types of Broadcast Syndication There are two types of broadcast syndication. A program like Dr. Phil is called first-run syndication. Thats because the program was originally created to be sold to local stations. It is airing for the first time on local channels nationwide. The other type is called off-net syndication. These are reruns that were originally shown on the networks, usually in prime time. Often, reruns of a TV network hit will be syndicated to local stations. Even though a series like Everybody Loves Raymond is no longer on the CBS prime time schedule, reruns air on local stations across the country, including those not affiliated with CBS. When a show like Raymond becomes a hit, it can generate two large piles of money. The first is when it airs on the network and commands high advertising rates. The next is when it is sold in syndication. Wheel of Fortune may be one of the most popular syndicated programs in TV history, but it got its start on the NBC network on its daytime lineup. Once it became popular on NBC, a syndicated version was created to sell to individual stations. The network version left the airwaves in 1989, but its remained a monster hit in syndication. A Different Way to Make Money in Syndication Most of the popular syndicated shows are sold to stations, which then have the ability to sell most, if not all of the TV commercials within them. A station may have paid a huge amount to get Wheel, but it knows it can turn around and sell the commercials at a higher rate because of the shows popularity. But a station may pick up a new show on a barter basis. The station will pay very little for the program but will allow the syndicator to sell most of the commercial time. The benefit to the station is that it can get a 30-minute or one-hour program for little investment, like to run in the wee hours of the morning, when it doesnt make sense to spend a lot. The syndicator then gets the chance to sell the commercials in its own program and get it on in more markets across the country than wouldve otherwise been possible in a cash arrangement.

The perils of achievement
The perils of achievement The perils of achievement A lot of the things we want in life stem from our need for stability. Most young people make critical decisions about their future lives and careers based on factors that they assume will give them some sense of predictability.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Similarly, many adults strive for financial freedom, so they donât have to think of money as something that deters them from fully controlling their lives. We dream about the white picket fence, a secure job, and a nice car or two in the garage so that we can be sure that we have some sort of foundation on which to build our lives. We need security, and we crave order, and we make a quiet presumption that our achievements will get us there. It makes sense, too. If we didnât have this orientation and if we didnât have a solid foundation, weâd be continuously exposed to chaos and uncertainty, and we would ha ve a much harder time feeling grounded and safe. There are many people that donât have any sort of stability in their lives - people that are poor or people without strong career prospects, for example - that we can look to who reassure us that these things are worth having.Yet, in a world where, fortunately, more people than not have some kind of grounded foundation providing this stability, we still see large-scale dissatisfaction, boredom, and a general sense of purposelessness. This sense of dissatisfaction, boredom, and purposelessness may be temporarily subdued when we find ourselves striving for the next thing that we presume will bring us stability, but for many, itâs still not too far away. What exactly are we missing? The Hidden Curse of AchievementLetâs break down the process of achievement into two different states. There is a state of striving where we are moving and working towards a goal. And then there is a state of accomplishment after having achieved said goal, thus achieving a form of stability. The general assumption we all make is that achieving this stability is what will make us satisfied. After all, that is the hidden purpose behind whatever goals we choose to define when we decide that we want something.First, we decide that a particular future will make us happier. Then, we choose a particular aim which we feel will allow us to experience said future. Finally, we set ourselves on our way to figuring out how to get to that goal.By definition, then, when we are striving - which is most of the time - we are in a state of instability. When we accomplish something, we gain ourselves stability. Thatâs how most of us intuitively think and feel about this process.Except, thatâs not how it really works. The paradox is that achieving a goal is what leads to instability, whereas the state of striving provides stability.Once we accomplish something, we lose our sense of orientation and get swayed towards the chaos that we naturally fear. On the other hand, while there is discomfort in the act of striving - which we confuse for instability - itâs ironically the only thing that actually keeps us grounded over time.Being in a state of unquestioned movement is what protects us from feeling that we are without a foundation. Achievement, however, is static. Once acquired, it fades towards instability.Volatility as a Measure of Well-BeingIn finance, volatility is essentially a measure of how much the returns of an asset are expected to deviate. Itâs the variation in price over a set period. The daily difference between the closing price of a stock, for example, could be something you might measure the volatility of. If it deviates a lot, then the volatility of that stock is high. If it doesnât deviate much, then itâs low.According to the author and statistician Nassim Taleb, systems of any kind with no volatility are bad at absorbing shocks, and thus fragile. Systems with some day to day volatile, however, can use such movement to absorb shocks well, and sometimes, even benefit from them. Itâs what he calls antifragility. When we are in a state of striving, we are constantly on the move over a sustained period of time. Some days, we move a lot. Other days, not so much.On a day to day basis, this movement may even be uncomfortable, but over time, it keeps us stable by protecting us from the chaos of disorientation. In a state of accomplishment, however, we donât move much at all. Weâve achieved what we wanted to, assuming we have acquired a sense of stability. On a day to day basis, we may even enjoy this lack of movement, but over time, if the lack of orientation catches up to us, it immediately throws us into a state of instability, causing damage that we donât even see coming.Humans, like most systems of the world, need a degree of volatility to stay healthy and being in a position where you have everything you could ever want makes you fragile to the insta bility that we instinctively aim to avoid. Not having every luxury of stability, ironically, is what keeps us stable.Whereâs the Balance?Naturally, no matter what the system, too much volatility can itself be harmful. Having some sort of a foundation is necessary. If we donât completely limit downside, then that same volatility can shock itself out of temporary and varying instability into complete chaos.Humans need some foundation of achievement, and we obviously need many of our basic needs met in order to have a shot at contentment. Getting some of the things we want is healthy and important. That said, the assumption that once we have everything we can imagine and want, we will be satisfied beyond our current level is more than flawed. While things like complete financial freedom or a career that goes perfectly according to plan can bring a lot of joy and value to many people, these same things can also indirectly cause a lot of misery. And they often do.Itâs easy to see ho w not having enough can be an issue, but itâs even easier to overlook how getting what you want might be similarly problematic.Sometimes, what you donât have is just as important as what you do have. This article first appeared on Design Luck. Are You Startup Ready How to Get a Job at a Startup
Are You Startup Ready How to Get a Job at a Startup Are You Startup Ready How to Get a Job at a Startup So youâre taking the plunge! Jumping into the large and varied pool of early-stage startups, that is. Congratulations. Deciding to gun for a startup job can be a big decision but often the risk is worth the reward. It could be a fat pay out and awesome years of experience when the company sells, or personal growth and cultural immersion condensed into eight months when it tanks. You might even land a hire at the next Unicorn company. As a pseudo hiring manager/recruiter for a tech startup (along with my actual 9-5 responsibilities), there are some pieces of advice Iâve collected after reviewing hundreds of applications over the course of the past six months. Do your homework Seriously, this is so important in the startup world. Your interviewer is going to throw out other startup names and industry jargon (bootstrapped-what?), and various obscure but borderline biblical startup tools. Itâs crucial to read everything you can about the company and its founders (think, some heavy Instagram stalking). Be sure to familiarize yourself with the startup world specific to their city, as well as the big fish from Silicon Valley. For startup interviews, youâll need to not only read everything thatâs publicly available online about the company but also itâs founders and the team members and the startup world specific to their city and the. Itâs great to have mapped out the opportunities and challenges for the particular startup, and if youâve already done contact referrals and tested the market, thatâs even better! Try the damn website! Whether itâs a dating app (and no, no one cares if youâre not single), or a demo for their SaaS B2B accounts payable software (see the jargon-use there?), you should try it out online. The free version of whatever they offer is just fine. Someone has poured their heart and soul into this and theyâre expecting a team that is just as excited as they are about the product or mission. So get on board before the interview and convey your excitement during it. Itâs especially helpful to have some user-insights and feedback. And if you decide during your demo you just canât get on board with this product, then itâs better to know early so you can respectfully decline an interview. Be respectful I know, why is this even on here? But a lot of times early-stage and smaller startup interviews are done by someone who is not a designated HR professional. Interviews can therefore feel awkward or choppy. Be gracious and allow for some ramp up in small talk. Most importantly, be respectful. Your interviewer, especially in initial rounds, could be much younger than you or non-technical. Be wary of condescending tones and preachy run-offs. These professionals will make recommendations throughout your interview process and a sour taste or bad first impression, no matter how cool you think your previous five startups and education degrees make you, can leave a lasting impression. It might get weird Startups are highly unconventional environments. Garages, apartments, co-working spaces or even coffee shops are likely places for interviews and even the companyâs day-to-day operations (especially when theyâre really early stage or small startups). Be prepared for the unexpected and roll with the flow. Startup interviews can feel really casual since a large part of a decision involves whether or not everyone gets along. Be wary of your level of comfort and aim to find a balance between professional and bar chatter. New and strange environments can throw candidates off their game, but nervousness shows so itâs best to enter your interview without expectations. Ask the right questions Venturing into a startup can be risky, so definitely ask all the questions you want about funding, future plans, hiring numbers and market competition. Bonus points if youâve already done the research here and are just looking for updates; sites like crunchbase and AngelList are perfect platforms as a starting point. While probing questions are natural for a startup, be sure youâre asking the right person. The initial interviewer, unless theyâre also the founder, wonât likely feel comfortable sharing with you a ton of the companyâs intimate details, particularly not on the first call. Facts and figures are fine, but questions like âAre you selling?â and âWhatâs the companyâs valuation and how much will my equity be worth in 5 years?â are better saved for later. Many of the specifics, including exact salary and benefits should be discussed in the contract negotiation. Donât forget, many early stage startups pay below-market rate due to the equity opportunities. Itâs best to decide early if thatâs something you can do financially. If the companyâs success isnât something you believe in, itâs best to move along. Step into the future Applying for a startup requires a certain level of forethought: what is it you want to be doing in five years? No, really. Do you want to work like crazy at below-market rate and then get an awesome equity cut since you were the third hire? Seems like a venture-backed startup could be for you. Do you want to change the world and eat ramen until you end up contracting your product to the government and moving to K street? Get in on the social justice or non-profit startups early. Are you looking to be the next COO of a Fortune 500 tech company? Then look for an awesome product you believe in and work super hard to better yourself and the company. Whatever it is youâre looking for, working for a startup means buckling down and looking ahead. So the office is a two-bedroom apartment with a TV on the ground? Think of what it will be eventually and get excited about the prospect of helping it get there. Startups are built on dreams and ideas, and that includes the anticipation for growth and change, so be prepared to be flexible and move quickly. Interviewing for an early-stage startup is a unique, and often undefined, process. If you know youâre meant for the startup world, or youâre interested in finding out, start looking for the ones near (or far) from you. Chances are there are garages and home-offices all over the world on the brink of something great.

A new handheld air quality monitor called c-Air, in early testing now, compares favorably with much more pricey machines. The device is based on a CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) image sensor, the same found in some digital cameras. Prof. Aydogan Ozcan and his team of engineers at UCLA have created a monitor that collects and places samples of microscopic particles in the air directly over the sensor. No lens required. The researchers call the technology computational lens-free microscopy. An operator can control the device through a mobile phone application. After samples are scanned, processing takes place through analytical algorithms on a remote server. The resulting device may be more accurate and capable of sampling a much higher volume of air than commercially available air quality monitors. And it could cost one-tenth or even one-hundredth of the price. We have made some important progress on the same c-Air technology by merging it with machine learning techniques or label-free detection of mold particles. Prof. Aydogan Ozcan, UCLA UCLA researchers have developed a low-cost, low-power portable device to measure air quality. Image: UCLA For You: Nanosatellite Studies Space Bacteria When we breathe, were constantly breathing in molds, pollens, bacteria, and viruses. By the end of today, many of you will have inhaled more than a billion viruses, Ozcan told an audience at the Social Innovation Summit in Washington in 2016. So, we need technologies that will, in a mobile, cost-effective platform, measure and quantify these, with the same sensitivity, precision, and accuracy you would expect from high-end institutional governmental devices. Indoor and outdoor air pollution is linked to 6.5 million deaths each year, accounting for 11.6 percent of all deaths around the world, according to the World Health Organization. Almost 90 percent of those death occur in low- and middle-income countries. The c-Air device counts and measures microscopic particles in air, called particulate matter, or PM. Knowing PM concentrations and what kinds of particles are in the air can help estimate the damage that pollution might cause. Particles that are 10 m in size can lodge in the lungs and are a cause of cardio-vascular disease, while 2.5 m particles are thought to cause cancer. As Ozcan and his team explain in a research paper, air sampling stations use either beta-attenuation monitoring or a tapered element oscillating micro-balance instrument. They are not very portable, weighing in at about 30 kg (66 lb.), cost anywhere from $50,000 to $100,000, and require trained technicians for maintenance. Commercially available portable air particle counters cost much less, roughly $2,000, but some can sell for up to $8,000. But they handle lower volumes of air and their accuracy may not be as high as the new c-Air device. Commercial counters can sample three to four liters of air per minute and their accuracy suffers when analyzing air with extremely high or extremely low concentrations of pollutants. In contrast, c-Air screens 13 liters of air per minute and could cost as little as $50 at a high volume of manufacture, or about $200 if produced in low volumes. The device also produces images of the particles, which other portable counters are unable to do. By imaging the particles, researchers can identify their types to build a picture of what kinds of pollutants are in the air in each area. Before c-Air, portable counters could only collect air samples to send to a laboratory for imaging. Specialized parts, high prices, and the requirement for maintenance and laboratory support make many commercial air monitors impractical in many regions of the developing world. But c-Air seems to have solved many of those problems. The air quality monitor is a prototype in development. We have made some important progress on the same c-Air technology by merging it with machine learning techniques or label-free detection of mold particles, Ozcan says. We would like to establish c-Air technology as a robust bio-aerosol quantification platform by merging it with deep learning approaches. 5 important life lessons to make you more successful
5 important life lessons to make you more successful 5 important life lessons to make you more successful I wish Iâd been smarter in my teens and early twenties. Like many others, I thought I knew what was best for myself, but I wasnât seasoned enough to understand how life lessons are gifts that keep coming- until we die.In my younger years, I didnât characterize many of my life lessons as gifts. They looked more like trials and tribulations. Itâs taken a while for me to understand that those same trials and tribulations created my destiny; they created person I became over the years.Life is a process: we rise up and fall down; we succeed and we fail. But these experiences hold important lessons for us- ones we need to learn if we hope to be a success in business and life. Here are 5 important life lessons to make you more successful:Life Lesson #1 Define Good ValuesToo often, success is measured only in terms of money or personal power. We all know people who became famous or made lots of money but failed miserably at being a good person because they didnât take the time to de fine good values for themselves. To become a successful human being, we need to mature physically, emotionally, socially, cognitively, spiritually, and morally. For many, the development of ethics and values is something that happens with little or no conscious thought. As a result, their life revolves around crappy values like the pursuit of pleasure, possession of material things, and a narcissistic âme firstâ mentality.Despite what the media tells you, pleasure wonât create life satisfaction. If you measure your success by material things and not your behavior, youâre a shallow person. As far as narcissism goes- if others think youâre God, thatâs OK; but if you think you are, that makes you a jerk.Humans were created for wholeness. We yearn to live a whole life, one of purpose and value. At our core, we are driven by a desire to be closer to people, to be part of meaningful conversations and community. Pleasure, material things, and selfishness are nothing but empty h ighs.Bad values are destructive and fractious. You have no control over them, which makes your life satisfaction dependent on the whim of others. Instead, nail down good values then pleasure, material things, and success will emerge from them. Good values happen on the inside, in that place that has no shape but gives us meaning and yearns for good. How To Make It Work For You: Values are personal choices you make about whatâs important to you. Here are some questions that will help you identify your top values in life: What are the three things you like most about yourself? Why? Who is the happiest person you know? Why? Who are the two people you like and respect the most? Why? Who are you? Life Lesson #2 Develop Self-AwarenessWhen people ask me to talk about how they can become mentally tough, I suggest they start with self-awareness. Self-awareness is the ability to take an honest look at ourselves, without judging what we find as either good or bad. Many people donât take the time or make the effort to get to know the most important person in their life- themselves. Ignorance of your competition makes you vulnerable. Ignorance of yourself makes you stupid- LaRae Quy Everything we need can be found inside ourselves. We have the tools we need to be aware of our bodies, aware of our emotions, and aware of our relationships. We cannot become self aware by reading self-help books or articles.Instead, we need a deep understanding of our past and current self. People with painful experiences in the past often balk at reliving that part of their life. Our experiences (both good and bad) shape how we see the world, so itâs vital for us to understand how the world has shaped our personalities.Your narrative is the story of your life and it impacts everything you do. Once you recognize your pattern of behavior when confronted with obstacles, disappointments, and setbacks you can control your response. Self-awareness enables you to anticipate a negative reaction and choose a behavior that will help you land on your feet when confronted by the unknown. As Woody Allen said, âItâs important to have some laughs, but you gotta suffer a little too because otherwise, you miss the whole point of life.â How To Make It Work For You: Make it a daily practice to set aside twenty minutes to reflect upon your day. Identify what experiences, people, or settings prompted an energizing joy. Why? Identify what experiences, people, or settings prompted an interior heaviness. Why?Life Lesson #3 Donât Settle For HappinessHappiness is a popular word these days but letâs be honest- happiness is nothing more than a fleeting emotion. If you want to live a shallow life, then go ahead and pursue all the happiness you can possibly cram into one day. And then start over again tomorrow because the pursuit of that elusive value will keep you on the run for the rest of your life.Happiness is a bandaid for what really ails us- our need to live a life full of value and meaning (see life lesson #1). Of far more importance is to seek the things in life that bring us joy and contentment. Donât settle for anything less. Moments of happiness will automatically spring from those things that produce life sat isfaction and fulfillment. To live is the rarest thing is the world. Most people exist, that is all- Oscar Wilde How To Make It Work For You: Answer these questions:Life Lesson #4 The Best Lessons Usually Show Up As FailuresOne of the primary reasons we learn so much from our failures is that they get our attention. If everything purrs along at a good clip, we can become complacent. One thing FBI agents learn early in training is itâs not the streets or guns that will kill you, itâs complacency thatâll lead to extinction.Failure will often persuade you to try something new, and you will keep drifting until you finally succeed at something. And that is where most of us stay- at mediocrity. Itâs a mediocrity that that comes from success without failure.Failure reminds us what we really want in life. If we experience a failure while in pursuit of an important goal, weâll push ourselves even harder. Weâll lean into our resilience to move ahead. At other times, a failure is a good time to re-evaluate our strategies and to shift gears.Warren Bennis once said, âAll great leaders have, wi thout exception, experienced traumatic failure. Itâs as if that moment the iron entered their soul; that moment created the resilience that leaders need.âWhile many life lessons show up as a failure, success can also produce good lessons. In a recent study, Professor Adam Kepecs of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory says we need to recall our victories as well. While failure gets our attention, success produces a brain chemical called dopamine which builds confidence in ourselves. Since the brainâs primary function is to keep us safe, the shot of dopamine reminds us that we can make clear, quick decisions in the future.Life is a wild and crazy rollercoaster, full of ups, downs, and unexpected turns. If things are good right now, enjoy it; it wonât last forever. When life is going wrong, donât worry; it wonât last forever either. How To Make It Work For You: The next time you experience failure, take a look at your goals (you have goals, right?) Review how your goals w ill lead you toward fulfilling your mission (you have one of those as well, right?) Maybe your goals need to be tweaked in light of new information. Plan ahead by anticipating the repercussions of another failure. Always have a Plan B and a solid action plan to help you move past a setback.Life Lesson #5 Your Attitude Is The One Thing You Can Always ControlMuch like happiness, optimism is another dud that will get you nowhere. Lots of self-help books encourage people to always look for the bright side of life and deny the negative stuff. Shit happens, thereâs no way to get around it. Sometimes the best thing you can do is look the beast in the face if you want to keep your sanity and move ahead.Optimism is a way to ignore many of lifeâs legitimate problems. It can be a way to avoid unpleasantness because optimists truly think that things will change for the better.Positive thinking, on the other hand, accepts the highs and the lows of lifeâs cycle. It doesnât deny the negati ve; positive thinkers believe theyâll overcome their circumstances rather than believe their circumstances will change. Our attitude impacts our thoughts, emotions, and behavior. The way we see things affects our chances of success and life fulfillment. How To Make It Work For You: As you review your goals and steps forward, take a critical look at how things could go wrong. Youâre not being negative; youâre simply pragmatic. When you examine how things might not turn out as you expect, youâre better prepared for the battle. FBI agents donât prepare for arrests by assuming things will unfold as envisioned. Instead, they look at them from every angle so they can anticipate where it might go wrong. Do the same thing. This article was originally published on LaRaeQuy.
